Puri: A Pilgrim’s Passage to Divine Tranquility

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The deity along with his siblings Subhadra and Balabhadra are worshipped. This temple is one of the main Char Dham Pilgrim destinations. The temple is believed to be self-manifested and is one of the holiest places in India. People of different backgrounds come together in this sacred space to seek blessings and attain Moksha.

Rath Yatra, the chariot festival in Puri takes place in June or July. The exact date is determined by the Hindu Calendar every year. It is a grand celebration where deities are taken out of the temple in massive chariots. The chariots are paraded through the streets covering a distance of 3 km and many pilgrims participate by pulling chariots. The entire Rath Yatra covers a period of approximately 10 to 12 days. A few rituals during the Rath Yatra take place: Snana Yatra, Rath Yatra, Hera Panchmi, Bahuda Yatra, Sunabesa, and Adhar Pana.
